Here are the toots from my Mastodon account. If you’re into ham radio and technology this is a great inclusive server with an awesome mascot called Alex.

It's Alex! A soft brown mastodon holding a handheld radio in their right hand and carrying a blue bag over their shoulder

The Verge has an article on “timeline” apps - https://www.theverge.com/apps/605756/tapestry-reeder-surf-timeline-apps it’s an interesting read.

I’ve been using Reeder and I’ve tried Tapestry (which I help kickstart) and I can see the attraction, it’s great having a timeline of blog posts, videos, etc that I can just scroll though but I found it pretty useless for mastodon because of the lack of interaction.

Also if you’re the sort of person who wants to reliably keep on top of RSS feeds I think a traditional reader will work best.

Just stumbled on this way of telling uv to install dependencies on running a script: https://akrabat.com/defining-python-dependencies-at-the-top-of-the-file/ very handy with https://akrabat.com/using-uv-as-your-shebang-line/

On my way from a work event at Glaziers Hall in London where I saw this amazing stained glass panel depicting Faraday and Newton. It’s the coat of arms of “The worshipful company of scientific instrument makers”.

I found some interesting information at https://wcsim.co.uk

A stained glass coat of arms depicting a man in red robes on the left and a man in dark robes on the right. The man on the left is Faraday and is holding an inductor. The man on the right is Newton holding a telescope. In the centre at the top is a depiction of Minerva, in gold and in the centre under miners a is a knight’s helmet on top of a shield with a picture of a stack of blue and yellow cubes. Finally across the bottom is the motto “Sine Nobis Scientia Languet”

I added sticky-backed EVA foam to see if that helps, no issues so far but it’s early days!

The enter key on my split keyboard is occasionally playing up.

I think it’s probably shorting on the aluminium plate which means the pins have pushed through the insulation I added!

I’m super late to this party, but as an experiment I asked ChatGPT and Cody to write me a browser extension to help manage tabs by letting me close all tabs which have loaded a certain domain.

It worked really well! I had to make a few small code changes, and I’m pretty sure totally non-technical people couldn’t use these tools like this yet, but as a way to scratch as an experiment an itch it’s great. It’s something I wouldn’t have started on my own.

Edit: code at https://github.com/mattfoster/tab-smasher

A screenshot of a popup page from a browser extension (in Firefox) it shows a list of domains and some path names. The page was written using AI.

I’ve been meaning to get back into interactive on masto for a while now, so I think it’s time for a re- #introduction

I’m a not-very-active ham, first licensed in late 2017 (got my full license in mid-2018).

My toddler and job limit my free time a lot, but I really enjoy seeing people post projects here & love the radio newsletters that have sprung up over the last few years.

I’m interested in data modes, #electronics, #infosec, #security, #hardware #hacking, etc.

I made badge kits for a Christmas party with some friends and wrote it up at https://hackerific.net/2024/12/17/christmas-badge-buildathon/

Great fun and very successful - highly recommended if you have geeky friends!

I went for a lunchtime run with a LILYGO T-Beam in my pocket running LoRa APRS tracker firmware ( https://github.com/richonguzman/LoRa_APRS_Tracker) on 70cm! It worked surprisingly well despite being a bit uncomfortable.

I flashed another LILYGO thingy with the I-gate firmware ( https://github.com/richonguzman/LoRa_APRS_iGate) and attached that to my antenna at home.

Overall pretty cool and cheap, and worth trying on the car.

I found https://lora-aprs.live/ pretty useful while setting things up.

A small rectangular circuit board with a display on the left an antenna attached vertically to the middle and a couple of visible modules on the right (a GPS and one marked LILYGO). The display reads M0PUH-7 and had a date, time and battery voltage, among other details.

A screenshot of a section of a map from aprs.fi. The map shows a short route along a canal, tracking M0PUH-7 on the 3rd December 2024.
